Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1525 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is William Barber's large Liberty head, which USPatterns.com sees as Barber's answer to Morgan's eagle-on-shield halves; the same obverse was later used on the goloid dollar patterns of 1878 to 1880. Two obverse dies were used: one with the date low (Pollock-1693, a single example) and one with the date higher (Pollock-1691, at least eight known). It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates the Pollock-1691 die pair R-7 and lists the Pollock-1693 die pair as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1691 and Pollock-1693, Adams-Woodin 1540 and Taxay EP1043. Cataloged as PCGS #61865.
