1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1518
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1518 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. The first Morgan obverse is paired with an eagle-on-shield reverse; USPatterns.com notes that these look like mules but cites R. W. Julian's finding that the reverses were made before the J-1503 to J-1507 obverse. The single known example was once described as silver-plated, but a retest found 91.8% silver and 8.2% copper. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1682 and Taxay EP1072. Cataloged as PCGS #12174.
