Description

The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1514 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. The first Morgan obverse is paired with an eagle whose tail feathers spread in a fan; R. W. Julian believes it was Morgan's first half dollar pattern of the year. Seven are known. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1678, Adams-Woodin 1522 and Taxay EP1064. Cataloged as PCGS #61852.
