Description

The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1512 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. This is the first of Morgan's four 1877 obverse dies, dated to February 1877 by R. W. Julian; the eagle-on-tablet reverse, slightly modified, was used again on the 1879 Schoolgirl dollar. Six are known. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1676, Adams-Woodin 1520 and Taxay EP1040. Cataloged as PCGS #61850.
