Description

The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1509 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. This pairing, Morgan's last half dollar design of the year, became the first prototype of the 1878 silver dollar; R. W. Julian dates it to late August or early September 1877. Six are confirmed in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1663, Adams-Woodin 1511 and Taxay EP1077. Cataloged as PCGS #61844.
