1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1508
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1508 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. This pairing became the first prototype of the 1878 silver dollar; R. W. Julian dates it to late August or early September 1877. USPatterns.com has not confirmed a silver example; the only trace it found is a check mark beside the Adams-Woodin number in H. O. Granberg's copy of the Adams-Woodin book, and a silver-plated copper J-1509 sold in 2000 may be that piece. Judd lists it in silver with a reeded edge. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1662, Adams-Woodin 1510 and Taxay EP1076. Cataloged as PCGS #71843.
