Description
The 1876 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1460 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of four similar Sailor Head obverses William Barber made for the 1876 dollar patterns, each paired with a common reverse; USPatterns.com considers these trade dollar essais, and the silver pieces are on 420-grain trade dollar planchets. This obverse has IN GOD WE TRUST below the portrait. Eight reeded-edge copper examples are confirmed, one of them in the American Numismatic Society. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1610, Adams-Woodin 1489 and Taxay EP1012. Cataloged as PCGS #61781.
