Description

The 1876 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1459 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of four similar Sailor Head obverses William Barber made for the 1876 dollar patterns, each paired with a common reverse; USPatterns.com considers these trade dollar essais, and the silver pieces are on 420-grain trade dollar planchets. This obverse has IN GOD WE TRUST below the portrait. USPatterns.com records two silver examples, both from Woodin's collection. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1609, Adams-Woodin 1488 and Taxay EP1011. Cataloged as PCGS #61780.
