Description

The 1876 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1458 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of four similar Sailor Head obverses William Barber made for the 1876 dollar patterns, each paired with a common reverse; USPatterns.com considers these trade dollar essais, and the silver pieces are on 420-grain trade dollar planchets. This obverse has neither stars nor motto. The single plain-edge copper example is ex Colonel Green. USPatterns.com notes that Judd numbered the plain-edge and reeded-edge copper pieces the other way round from Adams and Woodin. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1608 and Taxay EP1009. Cataloged as PCGS #61778.
