1873 Liberty Head Double Eagle - Open 3 - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1873 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1873 Open 3 Liberty Head double eagle, cataloged by the Wexler team. E PLURIBUS UNUM shows irregular doubling: clockwise (CW) on US of PLURIBUS and the U of UNUM, toward the center on PLURIBUS's L, U and I and on UNUM's NU, toward the rim on PLURIBUS's B, and counterclockwise (CCW) on its R. Traces of doubling also appear above IN and on the stars. The obverse is WDDO-001, an Open 3 variety. It has a gouge in the hair north of LIBERTY's B, 3 parallel diagonal scratches inside the lowest curl of hair, and a thin crack between the lower parts of the 7 and 3. On the reverse, a scratch runs NNE from the lower right of STATES's A to the rim. Edward R. Mill submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
