Description
Closing the 1872 quarter series, J-1199 features a copper-nickel composition that tests the conventional Seated Liberty design in the alloy used for five-cent and three-cent coinage. A copper-nickel quarter would have represented a significant compositional departure, moving the twenty-five-cent denomination from its traditional silver base into a base-metal alloy. This experimental piece anticipates by nearly a century the copper-nickel clad quarter that would emerge from the Coinage Act of 1965.
