Description

Among the most famous and coveted of all American pattern coins, J-1195 introduces William Barber's extraordinary Amazonian design on the quarter denomination. The obverse depicts a powerful, muscular seated Liberty figure resembling an Amazon warrior, holding a sword in her right hand and a shield in her left, with an eagle perched on a globe at her feet. Struck in silver, the Amazonian quarter represents the most radical departure from conventional coin design ever seriously proposed for American coinage, embodying a vision of Liberty as a warrior goddess rather than the passive, classically draped figure Americans had known for decades.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Very rare, approximately 3-10 examples known. Among the most valuable of all U.S. pattern coins.
