Description
The 1872 Proof Quarter Pattern - J-1195, Amazonian is a proof quarter pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Amazonian design: Liberty seated facing left, her right hand on the head of a perched eagle and her left arm on a shield, holding a sword. Its reverse shows an eagle standing with its talons on a shield inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST. The design was issued in sets of the quarter, half dollar and dollar in silver, copper and aluminum, and the name Amazonian goes back to the 1890 New York sale of the Lorin G. Parmelee collection. USPatterns.com traces at least nine different examples in silver, with two or three more possibly in complete silver sets. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1335, Adams-Woodin 1263 and Taxay EP854. Cataloged as PCGS #61466.
