Description
The 1872 Proof Quarter Pattern - J-1196 is a proof quarter pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Amazonian design: Liberty seated facing left, her right hand on the head of a perched eagle and her left arm on a shield, holding a sword. Its reverse shows an eagle standing with its talons on a shield inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST. The design was issued in sets of the quarter, half dollar and dollar in silver, copper and aluminum, and the name Amazonian goes back to the 1890 New York sale of the Lorin G. Parmelee collection. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1336, Adams-Woodin 1264 and Taxay EP855. Cataloged as PCGS #61467.
