The 1872 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1203 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1872 half dollar dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1872 copper and aluminum strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle. Three or four are believed to exist in copper, one of them given to the Smithsonian in 1963. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1343 and Adams-Woodin 1261. Cataloged as PCGS #61474.
