Description

The 1872 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1201 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Amazonian design of Liberty seated beside a perched eagle with a shield and a sword, and its reverse an eagle standing on a shield. Unlike the quarter and dollar, the half dollar has an olive branch draped over the shield, which USPatterns.com links to criticism that the design looked too military; it believes this die was made last. The design was issued in sets of the quarter, half dollar and dollar in silver, copper and aluminum, and the name Amazonian goes back to the 1890 New York sale of the Lorin G. Parmelee collection. Copper examples often show a flattened dentil at the top of the obverse, caused by something stuck to the die. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1341, Adams-Woodin 1259 and Taxay EP858. Cataloged as PCGS #61472.
