Description
The 1872 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1223 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It pairs William Barber's adaptation of Longacre's Indian Princess design with a new reverse showing a small perched eagle under a ribbon reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, with 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE and TRADE DOLLAR below. Q. David Bowers suggests that it was struck early in 1873 from an obverse die dated 1872 and calls it the first pattern with an eagle close to the adopted trade dollar reverse. One example is confirmed, ex Woodin, Newcomer, Farouk and Bass. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1365, Adams-Woodin 1247 and Taxay EP879. Cataloged as PCGS #61495.
