Description
The 1872 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1207 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Amazonian design of Liberty seated beside a perched eagle with a shield and a sword, and its reverse an eagle standing on a shield; one feather of the eagle's right wing was left unfinished on the dollar die. The design was issued in sets of the quarter, half dollar and dollar in silver, copper and aluminum, and the name Amazonian goes back to the 1890 New York sale of the Lorin G. Parmelee collection. Three examples are known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1347, Adams-Woodin 1257 and Taxay EP862.
