Description
The 1870 Proof Two Cent Pattern - J-793a, /25C is a proof two-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It is a fantasy that pairs the regular 1870 two-cent reverse die with the Standard Silver quarter reverse used on J-888 to J-893, struck on a planchet of silver streaks in copper said to be native Michigan ore. Judd files it with the two-cent pieces because that planchet stock was used almost only for two-cent patterns, and USPatterns.com believes the two-cent die is one used for later restrikes. The single known example came from the Johnson (1898), Hall and Brand collections. It is struck in silver and copper rolled together with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-880. Cataloged as PCGS #12226.
