1870 Proof Two Cent Pattern - J-791
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A copper striking from the same die pair as J-790, this two-cent pattern features the shield obverse bearing IN GOD WE TRUST and the wreath reverse with denomination. Copper was the natural comparison metal for two-cent patterns, as the denomination had been struck in bronze (95% copper) since its inception in 1864. William Barber's copper striking allowed direct visual comparison between the established bronze composition and Linderman's proposed standard silver alloy, highlighting how dramatically different the familiar shield design appeared depending on the metal chosen.
