Description
Representing the most exotic composition in the two-cent pattern group, J-793 was struck in aluminum using the same shield obverse and wreath reverse dies as the preceding varieties. Aluminum's remarkable lightness would have made this piece feel almost weightless compared to its bronze production siblings, a striking tactile demonstration of an alternative future for American minor coinage. The extremely low density of aluminum raised practical concerns about public acceptance, as coins that felt insubstantial might be perceived as valueless regardless of their legal tender status.
