Description
Expanding the metallurgical experiments for the two-cent denomination, J-792 was struck in copper-nickel using the same shield obverse and wreath reverse dies employed for J-790 and J-791. Copper-nickel had proven its viability for small-denomination coinage through the three-cent nickel (introduced 1865) and the Shield nickel (introduced 1866), making it a credible alternative composition for the two-cent piece. The silvery appearance of the copper-nickel alloy gave this pattern a distinctly different aesthetic from its bronze production counterparts.
