1870 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-974
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The plain-edge aluminum companion to J-973, this pattern renders the open-wreath coronet Liberty Head obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse without edge reeding. Barber's diadem design on this obverse reflected a more restrained neoclassical approach compared to the ornate starred coronets of earlier groups. The smooth, unadorned headband inscribed simply with LIBERTY evokes Roman portraiture rather than the heavily decorated coronets favored by earlier American coin designers, suggesting Barber was exploring a more timeless aesthetic for the proposed reformed coinage.
