Description

The 1870 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-927 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. Its obverse is William Barber's new seated Liberty of 1870, facing left with her right hand on a shield crossed by a LIBERTY scroll, an olive branch in her left hand and a pole and cap behind her, within 13 stars and above the date. Its reverse puts 50 CENTS inside an open wreath of cotton and corn with STANDARD at the top. USPatterns.com reports that these pieces were sold in complete sets. Judd assigns J-927 to J-932 to an obverse die with LIBERTY incuse on the scroll and J-927a to J-930a to one with LIBERTY raised; USPatterns.com has seen only the raised die and believes the incuse listings do not exist as a separate die. About a half dozen are known in silver. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1032 and Adams-Woodin 884. Cataloged as PCGS #61171.
