Description
Opening the massive seventy-two variety half dollar subseries within the 1870 Standard Silver program, J-927 features the standard Seated Liberty obverse with Liberty seated on a rock, her right hand resting on a union shield and her left hand holding an olive branch, with a liberty cap atop a pole rising behind the shield. The word LIBERTY appears in raised letters on the shield, a detail that distinguishes this die from later recuttings. The reverse displays the Standard Silver agricultural wreath of cotton and corn enclosing 50 CENTS with the date 1870 below and the word STANDARD at the upper border. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this piece represents the most production-ready configuration in the first design group.
