Description
Introducing the third obverse design in this batch, J-973 features Barber's open-wreath coronet obverse showing Liberty facing right and wearing a plain diadem inscribed LIBERTY with her hair gathered in a bun at the back of the head. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches above and IN GOD WE TRUST appears on a scroll below the bust. The reverse returns to the STANDARD agricultural wreath enclosing 50 CENTS and the date 1870. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge, this piece marks a notable departure from the previous group's single-star coronet, trading ornamental detail for classical restraint.
