1870 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-967
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Beginning the second group, J-967 retains the single-star coronet Liberty Head obverse but replaces the STANDARD wreath reverse with the regular-issue With Motto eagle reverse used on circulating Seated Liberty half dollars since 1866. The eagle clutches an olive branch and three arrows beneath a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and HALF DOL. below. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge, this die marriage tested whether Barber's experimental obverse could function seamlessly alongside a reverse the public already recognized from their pocket change.
