Description
Copper with a plain edge, J-960 presents the inscribed-diadem Liberty Head obverse and regular-issue eagle reverse in a medallic copper format. This variety closes the copper portion of the sixth design group; the remaining aluminum pair (J-961 and J-962) continues in the next batch. The combination of Liberty's dignified diadem portrait with the heraldic eagle on a smooth-edged copper planchet achieves a museum-quality presentation that recalls the finest European art medals of the period. Heritage Auctions records describe surviving examples as predominantly brown-toned, with the original red having mellowed through more than a century and a half of careful preservation.
Rarity Notes
R-7. Extremely rare, estimated 4-12 examples survive.
