Description

The plain-edge silver companion to J-951, this Liberty Head half dollar pattern with inscribed diadem and STANDARD wreath reverse occupies a scarcer position in the survival census than its reeded-edge twin. The diadem-and-bun Liberty portrait represents Barber's most classically restrained approach in the half dollar series, drawing on Greco-Roman sculptural traditions where headbands inscribed with the wearer's identity were a common artistic convention. Without edge reeding, this piece takes on a quieter, more formal quality that emphasizes the elegant simplicity of the portrait.
