Description
Closing the third design group, J-944 renders the three-star cap Liberty Head and STANDARD wreath reverse in aluminum with a plain edge. As the sixth variety completing this obverse-reverse combination, it marks the end of Barber's exploration of the three-star cap motif for the half dollar denomination paired with the STANDARD wreath. The plain edge on an aluminum planchet produces the lightest and most delicate piece in the group, an object that challenges every sensory expectation associated with a half dollar. Surviving aluminum patterns from 1870 frequently display minor surface oxidation and occasional small pits characteristic of this chemically reactive metal.
Rarity Notes
R-8. Very rare, approximately 2-4 examples survive. One of the rarest varieties in the half dollar series.
