Description
Presenting the regular-issue eagle reverse on a copper planchet with a plain edge, J-936 carries the Seated Liberty obverse in the least production-ready configuration of this design group. Without either reeded edges or silver content, this piece served purely as a specimen for design evaluation and collector distribution. The warm brown toning that develops on copper over time gives aged examples a distinctive warmth that contrasts with the sharp, frosty proof surfaces originally imparted by Barber's carefully prepared dies. Plain-edge copper half dollar patterns from the 1870 Standard Silver series are among the scarcer varieties in their respective groups.
