Description

Concluding the first design group, J-932 presents the Seated Liberty obverse with raised LIBERTY and STANDARD wreath reverse in aluminum with a plain edge. As the final variety in this obverse-reverse combination, it completes the systematic matrix of three metals and two edge types that William Barber applied to every design pairing in the half dollar series. The plain edge on an aluminum planchet produces an almost medallion-like quality, devoid of the tactile cues that silver coins provided through both weight and edge reeding. Aluminum patterns from 1870 frequently display the characteristic light gray surfaces and occasional minor pitting inherent to this reactive metal.

Rarity Notes

R-7. Extremely rare, estimated 4-12 examples survive.
