Description
Using the same regular 1870 Seated Liberty dime production dies as J-873, this die trial was struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Aluminum impressions of regular-issue dies hold a particular fascination because they reveal familiar, circulating coin designs in an entirely unfamiliar medium. The Seated Liberty dime that Americans knew as a small silver coin weighing 2.49 grams becomes an almost impossibly light object in aluminum, fundamentally altering the relationship between the design and the viewer's physical experience of the coin.
