Description

Opening the extensive 1870 Standard Silver dime series, J-825 pairs the regular Seated Liberty dime obverse — James B. Longacre's figure of Liberty seated on a rock, holding a staff with liberty cap and a shield inscribed LIBERTY — with a Standard Silver wreath reverse displaying 10 CENTS within an open wreath of corn and cotton, with STANDARD at the top border. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this pattern represents Mint Director Henry R. Linderman's effort to test whether a reduced-weight silver coinage could replace fractional currency notes then circulating as small change. The familiar production obverse grounded the experimental reverse in a design the public already recognized.
