Description

Completing the first design group, J-830 renders the regular Seated Liberty obverse and Standard Silver wreath reverse in aluminum with a plain edge. As the sixth of six systematic compositions for this die pairing, the piece closes out a methodical exploration of how one design combination performs across silver, copper, and aluminum with both reeded and plain edges. The plain-edge aluminum striking is among the lightest and most ethereal of all 1870 dime patterns, a coin that weighs almost nothing yet embodies an ambitious plan for the future of American silver coinage.
