1870 Proof Dime Pattern - J-872
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Completing Group 8 and the standard design groups, J-872 presents the eighth Liberty Head variant and Standard wreath reverse in aluminum with a plain edge. This piece marks the end of the systematic obverse/reverse/metal/edge survey that defines the 1870 Standard Silver dime program. From J-825 through J-872, forty-eight pattern varieties explored every permutation of eight design concepts in three metals with two edge types — a monument to the thoroughness, if not the practical efficiency, of the Mint's experimental approach under Linderman's direction.
