Description
Copper with a reeded edge carries the eighth Liberty Head obverse variant and Standard wreath reverse. With eight distinct Liberty portrait concepts tested across groups 1 through 8, the 1870 dime program documented an extraordinarily broad range of artistic directions for what was ultimately a small coin with limited design real estate. The copper version of each group serves as an important record of the die work independent of the precious-metal context, revealing Barber's engraving choices without the visual distraction of the silver's bright luster.
