Description
A plain-edge copper striking of the forehead ornament Liberty Head paired with the Standard wreath reverse. William Barber's prolific output in 1870 is remarkable even by the standards of a decade that saw unprecedented experimentation in American pattern coinage. The 258 different types and metal combinations cataloged by Judd for 1870 alone dwarf the production of any other year, and the 51 dime patterns constitute a significant portion of that total. Each piece, including this plain-edge copper variant, was individually struck as a proof with careful attention to surface quality.
