Description

The fifth obverse variant in the dime series features a bust of Liberty facing right wearing an ornamented headband, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date below. The reverse continues the Standard wreath motif with 10 CENTS and STANDARD. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-849 is one of the more available varieties in the series, rated R-5. This headband design offered a middle ground between the elaborate Phrygian cap of Group 3 and the restrained diadem of Group 4, testing whether an intermediate level of ornamentation would resonate with public taste.
