Description
Closing Group 4, J-848 presents the diademed Liberty without tiara stars on an aluminum planchet with a plain edge. Each successive group in the 1870 Standard Silver dime series introduced a new obverse while maintaining the Standard wreath reverse as a constant, enabling direct comparison of how different portrait concepts performed on dime-sized planchets. The diademed Liberty represented a departure from both the seated figure tradition and the cap-and-stars approach, exploring whether a simpler, more classical portrait might better suit a reformed national coinage.
