Description
A copper striking with a plain edge, J-846 continues the systematic survey of the diademed Liberty obverse without tiara stars. William Barber's methodical approach to the 1870 Standard Silver program meant that each obverse concept received equal treatment in terms of composition and edge experiments, regardless of whether the design was a leading candidate for adoption or a secondary concept. The copper plain-edge version provides the maximum contrast to the silver reeded-edge J-843, allowing direct comparison of how metal and edge treatment affect a design's visual and tactile character.
