Description
An aluminum striking with a reeded edge, J-841 translates the three-star Liberty cap obverse and large Standard wreath reverse into the lightest metal employed in the 1870 program. Aluminum pattern dimes from 1870 are among the most challenging coins in the series to locate, as the soft metal was prone to damage and many examples did not survive a century and a half of handling. The silvery appearance of aluminum gives this piece a superficial resemblance to its silver siblings, though the dramatically lower weight immediately distinguishes it in hand.
