Description
Sharing the Liberty Head with three-star cap obverse and large Standard wreath reverse of J-837, this plain-edge silver striking offers a distinctly different tactile experience despite bearing identical designs. The three-star Phrygian cap obverse represents one of William Barber's most distinctive contributions to the 1870 program, departing from both the traditional Seated Liberty and the classical bust portraits to create something entirely new. Barber's design would not be adopted for the dime, but it demonstrates the creative freedom the Standard Silver proposal afforded the Mint's engravers.
