Description

This 1870 Indian Head cent displays a distinctive die gouge designated FS-303, nicknamed the "Pickaxe" variety. The die gouge is in the shape of a pickaxe, located just east of the joint where the bottom feather meets the Liberty headband on the obverse. Die gouges occur when a foreign object or tool accidentally damages the die surface during production or maintenance, creating a raised feature on the struck coins. The recognizable pickaxe shape of this gouge makes it one of the more visually distinctive die damage varieties in the Indian Head cent series.
