Die gouges occur when a sharp object accidentally contacts the die surface, cutting into the steel and creating a recessed area that produces a corresponding raised feature on struck coins. The 1869 Indian Head Cent is considered a semi-key date with a mintage of approximately 6.4 million pieces, substantially lower than many surrounding dates and placing it among the more desirable issues for collectors assembling date sets. Struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint in the copper-nickel composition used from 1860 through 1864 before transitioning to bronze, the 1869 actually uses the bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc adopted in 1864.
