Description

This undated round gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-834, a Period Two piece of California fractional gold that PCGS attributes to 1870-1. NGC lists it with a Liberty head on the obverse. Breen and Gillio put the jewelers' issues of 1858-1882 (1859-1882 in their first edition) into Period Two; most were lighter than their face value and were sold as charms and keepsakes, until the Secret Service enforced the 1864 ban on private coinage in 1883. Catalogue number: BG-834. PCGS number 10695.
