Description

This 1852-dated round gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-891, a Period Two piece of California fractional gold. NGC lists it with an Indian head on the obverse. Its date is earlier than Period Two, but Breen and Gillio number it with the later jewelers' issues. Breen and Gillio put the jewelers' issues of 1858-1882 (1859-1882 in their first edition) into Period Two; most were lighter than their face value and were sold as charms and keepsakes, until the Secret Service enforced the 1864 ban on private coinage in 1883. Catalogue number: BG-891. PCGS number 10752.
