Description

This 1856-dated round gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-818A, a Period Two piece of California fractional gold. NGC lists it with a Liberty head on the obverse. Its date is earlier than Period Two, but Breen and Gillio number it with the later jewelers' issues. Mike Locke (2013) describes BG-818A as a restrike of about 1860 from the dies of the Period One octagonal quarter BG-111, struck on a round planchet. Breen and Gillio put the jewelers' issues of 1858-1882 (1859-1882 in their first edition) into Period Two; most were lighter than their face value and were sold as charms and keepsakes, until the Secret Service enforced the 1864 ban on private coinage in 1883. Catalogue number: BG-818A. PCGS number 10661.
