Description

The twenty-first and final quarter pattern variety for 1869, J-741 concludes the most extensive single-year design study ever conducted for the American quarter. The program spanning J-721 through J-741 produced twenty-one varieties documenting William Barber's comprehensive vision for the denomination's future. While the Seated Liberty quarter would continue through 1891, the experimental groundwork laid in 1869 contributed to the design thinking that would eventually produce the Barber quarter of 1892 and influence subsequent quarter designs through the present day.
