Description
This proof quarter pattern is the third variety in the extensive 1869 series. The simultaneous production of large-scale experimental programs for both the dime and quarter indicates that Barber was conducting a comprehensive review of the Mint's silver coinage designs. The quarter's IN GOD WE TRUST motto, which had been added in 1866, was by now well established, and these patterns could focus on broader design questions rather than the motto-integration concerns that had driven earlier experimental programs.
