Description
This proof quarter pattern from 1869 begins a twenty-one variety series for the twenty-five cent denomination, the most extensive quarter pattern program in the Reconstruction era by a wide margin. Like the dime, the quarter received unprecedented experimental attention in 1869 under William Barber's new leadership. The Seated Liberty quarter had been in production since 1838 and was due for design evaluation, and Barber's ambitious approach generated more quarter varieties in a single year than the previous three years combined. J-721 establishes the first design concept in this comprehensive study of the denomination's future.
