Description

This proof quarter pattern continues the closing phase of the 1869 program with its seventeenth variety. The extensive nature of this experimental series created a design legacy that would influence American coin design for decades. Design concepts tested in the 1869 quarter patterns resurfaced in modified form during the Trade Dollar development of the 1870s, the Barber coinage redesign of 1892, and the Standing Liberty quarter of 1916.
